In the sectors of beverage, personal care, and pharmaceutical packaging, ROPP (Roll-On Pilfer-Proof) caps have become the mainstream choice due to their excellent sealing, tamper-evident features, and re-closability. The forming precision, sealing stability, and resistance to pressure and corrosion of these caps depend entirely on the alloy grade and processing temper of the raw aluminum sheet or coil.
In large-scale ROPP cap production, the 8011-H14 and 3105-H14 alloy-temper combinations are the most widely recognized and utilized in the industry; each offers distinct performance advantages suited to specific production requirements.
ROPP caps are precision, thin-walled, stamped components. Their production involves multiple stages—such as leveling, stamping, deep drawing, curling, threading, and coating/printing—placing extremely high demands on the aluminum's overall performance. These requirements serve as the primary criteria for selecting the appropriate alloy and temper.
Firstly, the aluminum must exhibit excellent deep-drawing formability, a low earing rate, and resistance to cracking or deformation, making it suitable for high-speed automated stamping lines.
Secondly, it requires precisely balanced mechanical strength: the material must allow for lightweight cap designs while maintaining sufficient compressive strength to withstand internal pressure and external forces during transport.
Finally, it must possess good corrosion resistance and surface flatness to accommodate downstream processes like coating, spraying, and printing, while ensuring the safety of the packaged contents.
Standard pure aluminum or ordinary aluminum alloys often suffer from insufficient strength, a tendency to crack during forming, and excessive surface defects, rendering them unsuitable for mass-producing ROPP caps. In contrast, 8011 and 3105 alloy coils in the H14 (half-hard) temper perfectly meet all these production requirements, establishing themselves as the industry-standard materials.
The 8011 alloy is an aluminum-iron (Al-Fe) series rust-proof alloy and serves as the classic base material for ROPP caps, PP pilfer-proof caps, and tear-off caps. When processed to the H14 half-hard temper, it achieves an optimal balance between formability and stability, making it the preferred material for lightweight, standard bottle caps.
In terms of core performance, 8011 H14 aluminum coil for ROPP caps features a stable tensile strength of 125–155 MPa and an elongation of ≥2%, with uniform material texture and sufficient toughness. Its standout advantages are an ultra-low earing rate and exceptional deep-drawing performance; in thin-walled specifications (0.15–0.25 mm), it resists defects such as cracking, wrinkling, and deformation during high-speed stamping, deep curling, and threading. It boasts a high finished-product pass rate, making it perfectly suited for large-scale mass production.
Additionally, the material offers excellent airtightness, light-shielding properties, and resistance to moisture and corrosion. Its chemical stability ensures it does not react with beverages, household chemical solvents, or pharmaceutical preparations, meeting safety standards for food and pharmaceutical packaging.
Regarding applications, 8011 H14 aluminum is primarily used for standard lightweight ROPP (Roll-On Pilfer-Proof) caps. It is widely employed in packaging for products that do not require high-pressure resistance or high corrosion resistance, such as purified water, fruit juices, tea drinks, standard household chemical lotions, and conventional pharmaceuticals.
Furthermore, the aluminum features a high-quality surface finish that supports excellent coating, printing, and adhesion. The resulting caps have a uniform appearance, satisfying the aesthetic requirements of various brands. With a significant cost-performance advantage, it commands a major share of the market for consumer packaging caps.
The 3105 H14 aluminum closure sheet belongs to the aluminum-manganese (Al-Mn) series of rust-proof aluminum alloys. The addition of manganese significantly enhances the material's structural strength and resistance to deformation. In the H14 (half-hard) temper, 3105 aluminum serves as a core material for high-strength, high-sealing ROPP caps, effectively compensating for the lower strength of the 8011 alloy.
In terms of performance, 3105 H14 aluminum offers comprehensively upgraded mechanical properties. Its tensile strength reaches 150–200 MPa—more than 20% higher than that of 8011 H14—and it demonstrates superior resistance to compression, impact, and deformation. It retains excellent formability—with an earing rate of ≤2%—and balances high strength with processability.
It supports complex forming processes (such as threading and tamper-evident band formation) while withstanding higher internal pressures and external compression. Furthermore, the aluminum-manganese alloy substrate offers superior corrosion and oxidation resistance, making it suitable for demanding storage environments and ensuring the cap remains free from rust, deformation, or leakage during long-term use.
In terms of application, 3105 H14 aluminum is primarily used for high-pressure, high-performance, and functional ROPP (Roll-On Pilfer-Proof) caps. Key applications include carbonated beverages, sparkling wines, functional drinks, paints, highly reactive personal care products, and caps for high-pressure vessels.
Products in these categories often involve high internal pressure and are susceptible to compressive stress during transport and storage. While standard 8011-grade caps are prone to issues such as bulging, thread stripping, or seal failure, the high strength of the 3105 H14 alloy effectively prevents these problems, ensuring structural stability and a secure seal. Additionally, this material is frequently used for premium cosmetic caps and decorative cap shells, offering a balance of strength and high-quality aesthetic appeal.
