8011 Aluminum Cap Material Vs 3105 Aluminum Closure Stock

In the field of aluminum bottle cap materials, 8011 and 3105 aluminum alloys are the two most widely used categories. Whether for wine, beverages, or pharmaceutical packaging, the performance differences between these two materials directly determine the texture, durability, and cost control of the bottle caps.

Performance Showdown

The performance differences between 8011 and 3105 bottle cap materials stem from their different alloy compositions and processing techniques—8011 aluminum cap material primarily uses Fe and Si as additive elements, while 3105 aluminum sheet belongs to the Al-Mn alloy system. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses in key indicators such as strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance.

1. Mechanical Properties

From the perspective of core mechanical parameters, 3105 alloy has a significant strength advantage. In the commonly used H14 and H16 states, its tensile strength can reach 150-200 MPa, while that of 8011 in the same period is 125-155 MPa.

If continuous casting and rolling processes are used, the tensile strength of 3105 (H18 state) can be further increased to 220-260 MPa, far exceeding the 160-215 MPa of 8011 (H16 state). This difference in strength allows 3105 to better withstand the compression and impact during transportation, making it suitable for bottle caps with high structural stability requirements.

Conversely, 8011 aluminum sheet has superior plasticity. Its elongation is ≥2%, higher than ≥1% of 3105, and it has a lower earing rate, making it less prone to edge cracking and deformation during deep drawing, and able to precisely adapt to the stamping requirements of complex bottle cap shapes.

In addition, 8011 also possesses excellent moisture-proof, light-blocking, and barrier properties, with outstanding puncture and tear resistance, effectively ensuring the freshness of the packaged contents.

2. Corrosion Resistance

In terms of corrosion resistance, 3105 aluminum performs better. Due to the addition of manganese and a high aluminum content of 98%, Al 3105 possesses excellent corrosion resistance, especially against the erosion of media such as alcohol and carbonated beverages, and is not prone to oxidation and discoloration even after long-term contact.

While 8011alloy's corrosion resistance meets the basic requirements for food-grade packaging, its stability in strong media environments is slightly inferior to 3105. Furthermore, 3105 aluminium has good electrical conductivity (up to 41%), a characteristic that is more favorable for packaging processes requiring electrostatic treatment.

Processing and Surface Properties

The 8011 cap material has extremely high surface cleanliness, uniform color, and is free of spots and pores. After treatment, it can meet the Class A standard in water washing tests, perfectly suited for packaging scenarios with stringent hygiene requirements, such as pharmaceuticals and high-end foods.

3105 aluminum closure sheet, on the other hand, has stronger surface treatment adaptability, easily achieving processes such as color coating, printing, and anodizing, creating a more visually appealing cap appearance that meets the aesthetic and premium requirements of high-end wine and cosmetic packaging.

Application Scenarios

With its food-grade safety properties and excellent formability and barrier properties, 8011 aluminum foil has become a preferred material for pharmaceutical and everyday food packaging, widely used in pharmaceutical bottle caps, yogurt caps, and milk powder caps. Its standard thickness of 0.15-0.27mm allows for a "thin and easy-to-open" user experience, making it particularly suitable for the sealing requirements of pharmaceutical packaging such as oral liquids and capsules.

In addition, 8011 alloy can also be used for white and red wine bottle caps, as well as ordinary beverage bottle caps. Through casting or hot rolling processes, it can be adapted for the production of shallow-drilled bottle caps and tamper-evident caps, respectively.

The high strength and corrosion resistance of 3105 aluminum closure stock make it a core choice for high-end beverages and functional packaging: carbonated beverage bottle caps need to withstand internal pressure for extended periods, and the structural stability of 3105 effectively prevents deformation and leakage; white and red wine bottle caps are in long-term contact with alcohol, and its corrosion resistance ensures the long-term integrity of the cap's appearance.

Furthermore, its excellent surface decoration properties make 3105 commonly used in cosmetic bottle caps, where color coatings and printing processes can enhance the product's added value. Its standard thickness of 0.2-0.5mm allows for flexible adaptation to the strength requirements of various bottle cap designs.

Price Comparison

The price difference between 8011 and 3105 aluminum closure sheets mainly stems from raw material costs and processing complexity. Both follow a pricing system of "aluminum ingot price + processing fee," but the final prices differ significantly, directly impacting companies' cost control strategies.

Currently, the price of 3105 bottle cap material is generally higher than 8011, primarily for two reasons: Firstly, the added manganese in 3105 is more expensive than the iron and silicon in 8011, and its aluminum content is as high as 98%, resulting in higher raw material costs.

Secondly the processing of 3105 is more complex, especially the strength enhancement brought about by continuous casting and rolling, which further increases processing costs. 8011 aluminum, on the other hand, has a relatively mature production process, requiring only casting to meet the needs of most scenarios, resulting in lower processing fees and effectively reducing the cost pressure of mass production.

It should be noted that the prices of both are affected by fluctuations in aluminum ingot prices, and customized requirements (such as special thicknesses and surface treatment processes) will incur additional processing costs.

Generally, 8011 alloy has a more obvious cost advantage when purchasing in bulk, making it suitable for large-scale production that pursues high cost performance; while the price premium of 3105 can be covered by the added value of high-end products, making it suitable for mid-to-high-end packaging scenarios.
